Family Tree May Aid Treatment of Inherited Heart Disorders

Researchers who used family trees dating back to 1811 to estimate the death risk for people with inherited heart rhythm disorders say their findings can help doctors determine when to screen and treat today’s patients with these disorders.

Sudden cardiac death can occur in apparently healthy people due to heart rhythm disorders. Genetic testing can identify people with an inherited heart rhythm disorder (arrhythmia), but that raises questions about how and when to treat children who may not yet be experiencing symptoms, which can take years to develop. In the study, researchers used Dutch archives to reconstruct the family trees for patients with inherited heart conditions, including long QT syndrome, SCN5a-overlap syndrome, CPVT and Brugada syndrome. The arrhythmia-associated gene mutations examined in the study are rare. However, the children of people who carry one of these mutations have a 50 percent chance of inheriting it.

Longer supply may help women stick with the Pill

Women who get several months’ worth of birth control pills at once are more likely to stick with the contraceptive than those who get a shorter-term supply, a new clinical trial suggests. As it stands, private and public health insurance plans in the U.S. generally limit how many months’ worth of birth control pills can be prescribed at a time. The practice was established years ago, when there were concerns about the Pill causing certain health problems, including high blood pressure.

The idea was that having women make more doctor visits could help in catching any ill effects. But even now that those concerns have been eased, the restriction on Pill prescriptions remains. And studies suggest that it’s a barrier to women continuing with birth control pills; researchers have found that “running out of pills” is one of the most common reasons women cite for giving up the Pill.

Gel fuel linked to flash fires, severe burns recalled

Nine manufacturers will recall a pourable gel used to fuel decorative fire pots after explosions severely burned dozens of people, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday. The gel fuels indoor and outdoor decorative lighting basins sought for their ambience but has been linked to unexpected explosions that splatter skin and furniture with the molten, long-burning substance, the CPSC said. The substance, likened by victims to napalm, sticks to the skin and is difficult to extinguish.

Federal officials are aware of at least 65 accidents related to the gel products, including two deaths from a product previously recalled, and 34 hospitalizations. Victims suffered second and third degree burns to the face, chest, hands, arms, and legs, according to the CPSC.

Flu vaccine production to double by 2015

Global production of seasonal flu vaccine is expected to double to 1.7 billion doses by 2015, with 11 new manufacturers coming onstream in developing countries, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday. If a new influenza pandemic erupts, the world’s projected 37 vaccine makers could potentially triple their annual production of trivalent seasonal vaccine to make 5.4 billion doses of pandemic vaccine, the United Nations agency said.

But the actual amount would depend on the yield of the virus grown in the egg — disappointingly low for H1N1 — and how much adjuvant — which stretches the active ingredient — is used in pandemic vaccine, experts said.
